Acupuncture Treatment

Chinese medicine is thousands of years old. The earliest recorded use of is from the reign of the Yellow Emperor, and is supposed to be from about 2600 BC. The ancient Chinese noticed that certain areas of the skin became more sensitive when a person had a certain health problem. Over time, the Chinese started recording the location of the sensitive areas for a particular symptom or set of symptoms. These areas were connected with the internal organs whose malfunction caused that particular symptom. When outlines of the human body were drawn, these sensitive points were connected in ways to explain the functioning of the human body. The functioning of the body includes the various major organs of the body, and also the entire functional system, including the energy for the organ.
Looking at a text on acupuncture, there will be a number of spots, which relate to the sensitive areas described above. There will also be lines, or "meridians", which connect the various organs and indicate how the energy of the organs flow from one to another. The concept of energy (the "Qi") is fundamental to the application of acupuncture. According to the Chinese, we are given a certain amount of Qi at birth, and this is dissipated by daily living, and restored by ingesting food and air. In the foundation of acupuncture, the imbalance of this energy at various points in the body is the cause of illness. The absence of this energy at some point is death. The Qi circulates through the body in a cycle, moving from meridian to meridian and organ to organ. This energy is constantly moving, dissipating, and being restored.
China was where the technique of and its medical foundations began. Japan also has an extensive history of as an accepted and effective treatment for their people. Japanese has the same foundations as Chinese acupuncture, but several interesting differences in technique. traveled to Europe in the seventeenth century, being brought back by Jesuit missionaries who had lived in Beijing. did not receive wide acceptance at that point, though there were pockets of practitioners in several places in the West. got significant attention here only when M. Morant from France published many writings on in the 1940s. The detail and volume of his writings caught the attention of western physicians, who started considering it for pain control.

CBT sessions 'help' back pain

This well conducted randomised controlled trial found that group CBT was of benefit to people with chronic lower back pain compared with individuals who received one-off advice on how to manage their condition through activity modifications and symptom control.
Although the therapy was effective, the researchers noted that 63% of people attended ?sufficient? CBT sessions to potentially benefit and 11% did not attend any of the sessions. Further research would be required to find out how to increase the numbers who attended the sessions. Interestingly, these are not evidence-based and those methods which are evidence-based are not now used. Also, the predictors

Acupuncture May Help Depression During Pregnancy
A new study has found that acupuncture may be a safe and helpful alternative to medication for depression during pregnancy.
"We tested acupuncture as a standalone treatment," said study author Rachel Manber, a professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine, "and the results are very positive."
For the study, Manber and her team recruited 150 pregnant women who were diagnosed with major depressive disorder. All study participants were between 12 and 30 weeks pregnant.
The women were randomly assigned to one of three groups: depression-specific acupuncture, control acupuncture or massage. It is clear from systematic reviews that the evidence for the efficacy of acupuncture in chronic pain is currently not strong relative to placebo. It is unclear to what extent poorly designed or administered treatments and/or sham treatments are responsible. Acupuncture in Poststroke Rehabilitation. A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Trials.
CONCLUSIONS: Randomized clinical trials demonstrate that acupuncture may be effective in the treatment of poststroke rehabilitation. Poor study quality and the possibility of publication bias hinder the strength of this recommendation and argue for a large, transparent, well-conducted randomized clinical trial to support this claim and implement changes to clinical practice.

The use of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) for pain relief in labour: a review of the evidence.
CONCLUSIONS: there is only limited evidence that TENS reduces pain in labour and it does not seem to have any impact on other outcomes for mothers or infants. The use of TENS at home in early labour has not been evaluated. Although the guidelines of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence recommend that TENS should not be offered to women in labour, women appear to be choosing it and midwives are supporting them in their choice. Given the absence of adverse effects and the limited evidence base, it seems unreasonable to deny women that choice. More robust studies of effectiveness are needed.

The most debilitating adverse effects of chemotherapy and hormone therapy for women with breast cancer are vasomotor symptoms (hot flushes, night sweats). This randomised controlled preliminary study evaluated the safety and efficacy of venlafaxine and acupuncture, which has been found to be effective in reducing vasomotor symptoms in menopausal women.
A total of fifty women with stage 0-III pre- or postmenopausal breast cancer on hormone therapy with tamoxifen or arimidex, were randomised to twelve weeks of acupuncture (n = 25) or venlafaxine (n = 25) treatment. In this descriptive outcome study we validated these questionnaires in a busy National Health Service funded acupuncture clinic serving communities of diverse socio-economic circumstances. Background Uterine fibroids (UFs) are benign growths within the uterine muscle and are present in 30% of women during their reproductive years. With the exception of hysterectomy, there are no effective medical and surgical treatments for women with uterine fibroids .
